Use the taxi dispatcher or an official bus service. Do not accept unsolicited rides or help with your baggage.

The airport's Web site includes plenty of useful information, including:

Go out to the taxi stand outside the baggage claims area at curbside. Give your destination to the dispatcher and he will direct you to the correct taxi. The fares are metered, but don't include toll or tip. The fare to mid-Manhattan should be $34-$51. The journey will probably take 25 to 45 minutes.

Other Options
New Jersey Transit's Airlink bus (number 302) goes to Penn Station in Newark. From there you can catch a PATH or Amtrak train to New York — or to many other destinations. PATH trains run 24 hours a day and make local stops to the World Trade Center. Amtrak trains are more expensive and go directly to Penn Station.

Airlink buses leave each Newark terminal every 20 to 30 minutes for the 15- to 30-minute journey. The fare is $4 and you'll need exact change.

SuperShuttle now serves the New York area. Prices vary depending on your destination, reservations required. Call 800-BLUE-VAN (in Manhattan: 258-3826) for more information.

Several companies operate from Newark, including Airport Limo Express (1-800-624-4410), Carmel Car and Limo (1-800-924-9954), Dial Car (1-800-342-5106), and Skyline Credit Ride (1-800-533-6325). You can book in advance or call them from phones at the Ground Transportation Desk.

Limos are more expensive than a taxi. A typical fare to the Marriott Marquis Hotel, near Times Square, would be $50 plus tolls and tip.

All major rental car companies are represented at Newark.
