Israel: Tel Aviv
Ben Gurion Airport (TLV)
BEST WAY DOWNTOWN: TAXI or EGGED BUS

BASICS
The airport is 12 miles (20 km) southeast of Tel Aviv and 31 miles (50 km) northwest of Jerusalem. Information counters are in the main hall and the departure hall. The Israeli Government Tourist Office information desk is in the arrivals hall.

Note: Most airport functions are restricted on Shabbat, which begins Friday at about 5 P.M. and ends Saturday at 5 P.M. The airport's Web site can inform you regarding:

TAXI
As you exit from the terminal building, look for the supervised taxi stand. Give your destination to the dispatcher and he will direct you to the correct taxi. The fares from the airport are fixed, so the driver should not use the meter. The fare to the hotels on the beach, in the center of Tel Aviv, is 50 shekels ($16), and a little bit higher during the night. Travel time will be about 25 to 40 minutes to the seaside hotels such as the Carlton, Dan, and Ramada.

SHERUT
Shared taxis, called Sheruts, are available from the airport to all destinations in Israel. Sheruts are about half the price of a private taxi, so they're a good deal, especially if you're going to a distant area such as Haifa, or Jerusalem.

One of the easiest and most reasonably priced ways to get to Jerusalem is by the Sheruts. The fare is fixed per person and the driver will take you right to your hotel. The fare will be about 30 shekels ($10) with a journey time of about 45 to 60 minutes.

EGGED BUS
Egged (National Israel Bus) has more frequent service to Tel Aviv. Bus number 475 leaves about every 20 minutes during the day and goes to the central bus station. From there it is a short taxi ride to any area in Tel Aviv. The fare is about 9 shekels ($2) with a journey time of 30 to 45 minutes.

United Tours operates a bus service to the main hotels. The bus number is 222 and goes to the EL AL City Terminal at the central rail station, and then along the main avenue along the seaside, to stop at the major seaside hotels. Journey time will be 30 to 60 minutes depending on your stop. Except for Shabbat, the bus runs from 4 A.M. to midnight. It costs 15 shekels ($3) to the main hotels downtown and 11 shekels to the railroad station.

RENTAL CAR
Avis, Budget, Eldan, Hertz, and other local firms have offices at the airport and throughout the Tel Aviv area. Many hotels have rental car desks where you can get a car for an excursion up to Haifa, or to Jerusalem.

TO JERUSALEM
The easiest away to get to Jerusalem is by the shared taxis, or Sheruts. The fare is fixed per person and the driver will take you right to your hotel. The fare will be about 38 shekels ($8) with a journey time of about 45 to 60 minutes.
