| BEST WAY DOWNTOWN:
Stansted is located 31 miles (50 km) northeast of the center of London. There's a travel center just outside the customs area. The airport Web site is part of the BAA Web site with links to seven British airports. BAA is the British Airport Authority. Stansted's Web site includes:
An option, but an expensive one. Taxis are available in front of the arrivals area. The metered fare will be about Ј70 ($115), and the journey to central London will take from 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the traffic.
The Stansted Skytrain runs from the airport to Liverpool Street Station in London. Trains run every half hour from 5:30 A.M. until 11 P.M. The trip takes 40 minutes, and the one-way fare is Ј11 ($18). From Liverpool Street Station you can take a taxi or the Underground to your final destination. You can also take trains from Stansted Station to the north of England, to places such as Cambridge, Peterborough, Birmingham, Manchester, and Liverpool.
National Express offers bus service five times a day, Monday through Saturday, to Victoria Coach Station. If your destination is near Victoria Station, this is a convenient option. It's a little cheaper than the train, but will take about double the time to get to central London (60-90 minutes).
There are frequent buses to the other airports with Jetlink including a bus between Stansted and Gatwick, with stops at Victoria Coach Station, Chessington and Wandsworth. Fare is Ј17 ($26). You should leave at least 2-1/2 hours between flights if you are connecting to Heathrow, and up 3-1/2 hours for a Gatwick connection. The travel time to Heathrow is around 60 minutes depending on the traffic, and about 2 hours to Gatwick.
Major car rental companies have offices at Stansted. London driving, we hasten to add, is not for the faint of heart.
